First Family Hike

Months ago, Joey bought a fancy backpack to carry Jack on hikes. We have been dying to use it but technically we weren't supposed to put him in it until he was a sitting up unassisted. A few weeks ago we decided he was close enough and went on our first family hike. We were SO excited to break this thing out!

Here is Joey getting it all set up and making sure Jack fit. Jack seemed to like it immediately!

Trying it on...

Jack loves it already!

We wanted to start with a short hike just in case Jack freaked out so we chose Torrey Pines. We parked down by the beach and started up the windy mountain road to the trailhead. The pack was definitely overkill for this hike - many people were out there in flips flops and people were carrying their babies in regular carriers (slings, ergos, etc.) We probably looked a little ridiculous but we didn't care!

Ready to go!

At the top, we took a little break and Jack was still doing great. He seemed to really enjoy the ride and hadn't made a peep back there. He loves just looking around!

Little bathroom break
Since he was doing so well we decided to keep going and started down the beach trail. We only made it about 10-15 min longer before Jack became a little fusspot. It was so sudden. He went from happy and content to fussy in an instant. We realized that he looked like he was getting tired but wasn't able to get in a position to fall asleep in the backpack. I also thought he might be hungry. We found a spot to pull over and I starting nursing him. Two minutes flat and he was totally asleep!

Nap time!

So we just sat there for like 30 min waiting for him to finish his nap. We drank some water, had a snack, and soaked up the scenery. I found the whole thing pretty comical.

Sleeping like a rock (on a rock!)

When he woke up, he was all smiles so we took a few pictures.

Ah, I feel refreshed!

Sitting with daddy

I love hikes!

Family photo!

We decided that was enough for one day and headed back to the car. It was a great first run with the pack and we learned a few things to be better prepared next time. For one, make sure Jack is well rested before we go! We also realized we should've brought a ball cap for him instead of the bucket hat (it kept falling over his eyes) and we should've brought a few more supplies for him - like a blanket to cover up when nursing (or napping!)

A great first hike!

We can't wait for our next adventure!
